So NAFLD (non-alcoholic fatty liver disease) is a spectrum of disease that spans from simple steatosis or simple fatty liver to an indeterminate stage called NASH (non-alcoholic steatohepatitis) which is characterized by the inflammation, ballooned hepatocytes and even early fibrosis. Fibrosis can span from  mild to advanced or cirrhosis so the spectrum of NAFLD can span anything from simple steatosis all the way to cirrhosis, with patients that have non-alcoholic steatohepatitis being at the increased risk for developing advanced liver disease.
