Currently, no established hierarchy exists for the influence of metabolic risk factors on NAFLD progression. In this retrospective cohort study, V. J. H Yao et al. (CUNY School of Medicine/Sophie Davis Biomedical Education Program, New York, USA) investigated and ranked the independent and combined effects of three major risk factors, body mass index, haemoglobin A(1c), and total cholesterol, on NAFLD progression. Obesity was the most prominent risk factor. Treatment of all 3 risk factors over a five-year period presented a high likelihood of fibrosis stage regression for NAFLD patients.
