Consumption of diet rich in fat and cigarette smoking are independent risk factors of NASH and they often occur together in some populations.
The present study by S. Fouda et al. (RMIT University, Melbourne, Australia) investigated the mechanisms of high fat diet and cigarette smoking, individually and in combination, on the pathogenesis of NASH in mice.
This study suggest that oxidative stress is a key mechanism underlying cigarette smoking-promoted progression of hepatosteatosis to NASH.
