In this review, T. Huby and E. L. Gautier (Sorbonne Université, Hôpital de la Pitié-Salpêtrière, Paris, France) discuss “current concepts related to the role of immune cells in the onset and progression of NASH.”
NASH “has a strong immunoinflammatory dimension, and a vast network of immune cells is mobilised during NASH”. The authors describe here how immune cells can promote the transition from simple steatosis to NASH as well as the evolution of NASH to cirrhosis and HCC.
