In this Review, D. Q. Huang et al. (National University Health System, Singapore) discuss the global epidemiology, projections, and risk factors for NAFLD-related HCC, and propose preventive strategies to tackle this growing problem.

The prevalence of NAFLD-related HCC is high in several regions worldwide. In particular, the incidence of NAFLD-related HCC is increasing in the USA and China, with an increased number of cases expected by 2030. Patients with NAFLD and cirrhosis are at highest risk of HCC.

In the authors’ opinion, “individuals with NAFLD should undergo intensive lifestyle modifications to reduce the risk of diabetes, obesity and subsequent HCC” and “HCC screening should be considered in patients with advanced fibrosis and cirrhosis”.
