In this article, P. M. Abuja et al. (Medical University of Graz, Austria) propose that steatohepatitis develops in four phases with transitions, priming triggering, adaptation, and finally, senescence. Escape from senescence eventually leads to hepatocellular carcinoma.
This hypothesis for a pathomechanism of steatohepatitis is supported by clinical and experimental observations, and it is intended as a starting point and guideline for focused research on this complex disease mechanism.
