An international consensus panel has produced an influential report renaming the disease from NAFLD to MAFLD and suggesting how the disease should be diagnosed.
This viewpoint by M. Clayton et al. (University of Leeds and St James’s University Hospital, UK) explores the call from the perspective of nurse and allied health practitioners.
In terms of nurse perspective, the word MAFLD has positive connotations, while NAFLD have negative undertones. This call to reframe the disease will ultimately have a positive impact on nurse-patient communication, and improve patient care and quality of life, and reduce burden on health system.
